Bookshops & Bonedust pairs two of my favorite things together – an off-the-beaten path bookstore and a cleaning/makeover montage of a loved but ignored space. Toss in solid characters, a mildly tense mystery, baked goods, and the knowledge of Viv’s future, and you’ve got another cozy fantasy masterpiece to revel in.
There’s something so calming about an intense warrior orc getting a glimpse of average, every day life. She’s terrifying and she knows it, but she really wants to just put the past behind her and be someone else. We see her move on from that merc life in Legends and Lattes, but this prequel is the first step in that direction. The city is a mix of charming and crowded, with enough bustling happening to keep it interesting.
The invention aspect is just as fun as the first book, with Viv and friends inventing the concept of mystery wrapped books sold only with catchphrases. Watching the shop transform is just as exciting as the action laced through the cozy plot.
Baldree is a master of creating a supporting cast of characters you can’t help but love. The bookshop owner who is reluctant to make changes but secretly loves the renewed interest in her shop. The animated skeleton who cleans, advises and writes perfect calligraphy. The love interest who bakes perfect buns and confections. The pet gryphet named Pot Roast. The reclusive romance author who lives on the hill. They all play off each other so well, keeping you excited to see what happens next.
Finally, I can’t stress enough how talented Travis Baldree is as an audiobook narrator. He pulls you into the narrative smoothly and it’s easy to lose track of time, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for in cozy fantasy.
